An Interview with a Dragon - Part IX: Dragons, Psychology, and Unicorns

VR: Indeed. I see. I will be content in my speculations then. As you were speaking just now, it became obvious to me that you know a lot about human psychology.

AD: I am a few centuries old, so I have had a lot of time to observe humans. Also, dragons have been aware of the science of psychology long before it became popular with humans. Where do you think it came from anyway?

VR: You mean dragons invented psychology?

AD: Something like that.

VR: My God, why isn't this in textbooks? People in academia are so ignorant of how and why things are the way they are.

AD: But what would have been the point of telling people that? No one would have believed that psychology came from dragons. And it's not that we really care for recognition anyway - the message is more important than the messenger, you know?

VR: True. Indeed. Very true. I suppose it would be like telling people that unicorns invented psychology.

AD: Actually, they invented anthropology.

VR: WHAT?!?! Are you serious?

AD: Absolutely. The stigma attached to a mortal coming in contact with a unicorn has nothing to do with bad luck, magic, or some cosmic law - the unicorns just wanted to minimize interactions with humans because they were trying to study them objectively, and human-unicorn interactions were confounding variables in the studies.

VR: This-this is amazing.

AD: These are the facts.

VR: I guess sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

AD: Yes. This is because fiction is always derived from the truth.

VR: What do you mean?

AD: Something to think about for next time we meet. [he smiles with a toothy grin] It has been a pleasure meeting with you, and I hope our conversation will prove to be much food for thought for you and your colleagues and other humans.
