An Interview with a Dragon - Part IV: More about Dragons and Wizards

VR: (after laughing) What do wizards usually want when they do that? I mean, when they try to summon dragons?

AD: You know, it's funny. They usually want us to do things like destroy a village, or torment a rival wizard, or in cases of extreme ridiculousness, do their chores - basically things that they're too lazy to do for themselves. Some wizards think somehow that having a dragon do their "bidding" will somehow make them more competent, and they can brag to all their wizard friends about it. It's pretty pathetic if you ask me. Sometimes we send calendars through summoning portals just to remind them what year this is. I mean, there are barely any more villages left to destroy, or at least that are worth destroying. And destroying a city would just take too much work. A lot of buildings are fireproof. And who would really want to do that anyway? Let the humans be. There are plenty of good wizards to take care of the evil ones, and doing one's own chores builds character. So there's really no reason for us to do the bidding of some lazy wizard. It's just an ego thing for them.

VR: What would happen if a dragon did step through the portal?

AD: This is a different story. As I said before, younger dragons will sometimes get tricked into going through summoning portals, if not out of mere curiosity.

VR: And then what happens?

AD: Once a dragon has gone through a wizard's portal, it has to obey one command that the wizard gives, and then it is free to leave. The problem here is, the wizard can give any number of annoying commands, and some of them can take as long as a whole week to fulfill.

VR: What happens if a dragon is asked to do something that it does not want to do?

AD: Usually, it will just have to find some crafty way to get out of it. Either that, or a dragon will intentionally misinterpret the instructions from the wizard, or rephrase the wizard's request such that it could be interpreted differently, and then agree to that.
